
Air Astana is the national carrier of Kazakhstan and operates scheduled domestic and international services. Its main bases are Astana International Airport and Almaty International Airport.
The airline was established on 14 September 2001 and started operations on 15 May 2002. Air Astana began with the Boeing 737 aircraft in May 2002. Three Boeing 757s were added and in 2004 five Fokker 50s were acquired, the latter to largely develop the domestic network which is known today as Air Astana. It is a joint venture owned by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan (51%) and BAE Systems (49%). It has 1,761 employees (at March 2007)
Air Astana said it enjoyed record growth in 2007 as revenue rose 48% year-over-year, passenger numbers increased 46% to 2.1 million and capacity climbed 42% to 6.5 billion ASKs. It took delivery of two 767-300ERs, two A320s and two A321s, lifting its fleet to 18 aircraft (ATWOnline, June 1, 2007).
Late last year the airline placed firm orders for three 787-8s and six A320s (ATWOnline, Jan. 3 2008). It anticipates operating a fleet of 63 by 2022 and currently serves 25 domestic and 21 international destinations. The first of the newly ordered Airbus A320s will be delivered in 2012 and first Boeing 787-8 delivered in 2016.
The Air Astana fleet grew to 18 aircraft during 2007 following the delivery of two Boeing 767-300ERs, two Airbus A320s and two A321s.
In ratings published in August, 2005 by the well-known industry magazine Airline Business, Air Astana was rated fourth among the world’s 200 leading airlines in terms of the rate of growth of passenger volume and total number of kilometers traveled by passengers in 2004.
